Portrait of a President

Lucas has been learning about our U.S. presidents in school. The other day he handed me this drawing...

...and yes, that is a cigarette in President Obama's hand (If you don't know, this really happens to be a vise of our president). Upon inquiry, Lucas told me he had seen a picture of the president smoking on the computer (?). Now for some time, Lucas has been overly interested, fascinated, intrigued by the idea that people smoke even though they know it is bad for them. I think he is trying to figure out how to use this information to excuse himself from responsible behavior.
For example:
"Lucas, you've been playing your computer game long enough. You need to turn it off now."
"But Mom, I just can't stop, I'm addicted to it!"
(Does anyone else get excuses like this from their five-year-old or should I be concerned?)
Anyway, at some point while we were discussing his picture Lucas said, "You would think a president would know he shouldn't smoke. I guess he's not that smart." I just smiled.
Other details in his picture include a rather stout bald eagle on the ball of the flagpole, orange shapes by the president "to add some color", and if you look closely some lovely armpit hair.

One Month old

Little Mia turned one month old last week. I feel like I should say "I can't believe it!" but I actually can and not because the month has been so long but because it seems like forever ago since she wasn't part of our family...and since I've had a uninterrupted nights sleep. This past week she has started smiling which is just a marvelous thing. Now whenever the poor girl is awake and happy Mommy and Daddy and sometimes both, cram their faces into her line of vision and jabber to her in unnaturally high voices in hopes of her rewarding us with a grin. It is so worth the effort and embarrassment.

Lucas and LEGO's

I heard not too long ago that the inventor of LEGO's is a billionaire. I say anyone who comes up with a way to make a 5 year-old boy sit still for hours on end and create stuff deserves every penny and possible the noble peace prize. Playing LEGO's has been Lucas's latest hobby. Not only does it keep him happily entertained but often he hums/sings songs while he works. I love it. (BTW, he had just finished playing cowboy hence the bandanna.)

However, the guy who came up with this...

should be paying me billions. ;o)
